Fractured Art

1995-1997 (Ongoing)
Sometimes materials drive me to create sculptures. I was fortunate to come by a large amount of dowels of different sizes, from 2 to 5 inches in diameter. I “fractured” the dowels into hundreds of pieces, which enabled me to make shapes of large volume that spread in many directions. The fractured and computerized look of the pieces inspired me to experiment with lighting the sculptures. I began with colorless lights, and moved to projecting colored lights from many directions onto the pieces, which creates an exciting colorful fireworks effect as the piece turns and reveals unique visual moments to the viewer. This work can be recreated on a large scale in public parks, with the coordination of color lights.
