Do Touch
1986, Ongoing series
In the late 1980’s I developed a strong pull towards “primitive” art and the minimal art of Brancusi and his peers. When visiting galleries and museums, I was taken aback by the “Do Not Touch” signs, and felt the need to enhance the flat visual experience of art into something tactile and three dimensional. I created a series of sensual organic shapes, from palm to life size, made out of woods like Douglas fir, bass, cedar, and mahogany to emulate the warmth and color of human skin, to entice the viewer to touch and feel the piece, and engage with it’s three dimensionality. This is an ongoing series than I take great pleasure in increasing. These pieces are meant for indoor environments, so the texture of the wood will not deteriorate.
