Dependence
2007-2008, Snyder’s Farm, Route 212 (Ongoing Series)
The cube is the most used shape in all cultures. This stable form has proved itself throughout history, accommodating us in industry and in our homes. I began by experimenting with the three-dimensional outline of a cube, 8’ by 8’ by 8’, made out of thin 1” by 2” pieces of wood. When I leaned the cube on an angle against a tree, I was inspired to create a second cube, and lean the two against each other. This created a tension and excitement which led me to build a series of cubes leaning against each other in harmony, dependent on one another. The “transparent” cubes allow the surroundings of the sculpture to interact with the piece.
